2600’s amazing Hackers on Planet Earth con may go down under enshittification
Catch me in Miami! I'll be at Books and Books in Coral Gables on Jan 22 at 8PM.
It's been 40 years since Emmanuel Goldstein launched the seminal, essential, world-changing 2600: The Hacker Quarterly. 2600 wasn't the first phreak/hacker zine, but it was the most important, spawning a global subculture dedicated to the noble pursuit of technological self-determination:
https://www.2600.com/
2600 has published hundreds of issues in which digital spelunkers report eagerly on the things they've discovered by peering intently at the things no one was supposed to even glance at (I'm proud to be one of those writers!). They've fought legal battles, including one that almost went to the Supreme Court:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeCSS
They created a global network of meetups where some of technology's most durable friendships and important collaborations were born. These continue to this day:
https://www.2600.com/meetings
And they've hosted a weekly radio show on NYC's WBAI, Off the Hook:
https://wbai.org/program.php?program=76
When WBAI management lost their minds and locked the station's most beloved hosts out of the studio, Off the Hook (naturally) led the rebellion, taking back the station for its audience, rescuing it from a managerial coup:
https://twitter.com/2600/status/1181423565389942786
But best of all, 2600 gave us HOPE – both in the metaphorical sense of "hope for a better technological tomorrow" and in the literal sense, with its biannual Hackers On Planet Earth con:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hackers_on_Planet_Earth
For decades HOPE had an incredible venue, the Hotel Pennsylvania (memorialized in the phreak anthem "PEnnsylvania 6-5000"), a crumbling pile in midtown Manhattan that was biannually transformed into a rollicking, multi-day festival of forbidden technology, improbable feats, and incredible presentations. I was privileged to keynote HOPE in 2016:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1D7APjmVbk
But after the 2018 HOPE, the Hotel Pennsylvania was demolished to make way for the Penn15 (no, really) skyscraper, a vaporware mega-tower planned as a holding pen for luxury shopping and empty million-dollar condos sold to offshore war-criminals as safe-deposit boxes in the sky. The developer, Vornado (no, really) hasn't actually done all that – after demo'ing the Hotel Pennsylvania, they noped out, leave a large, unusable scar across midtown.
But HOPE wasn't lost. In 2022, the ever-resilient 2600 crew relocated to Queens, hosted by St John's University – a venue that was less glamorous that the Hotel Pennsylvania, but the event was still fantastic. Attendance fell from 2,000 to 1,000, but that was something they could work with, and reviews from attendees were stellar.
Good thing, too. 2600 is, first and foremost, a magazine publisher, and these have been hard years for magazines. First there was the mass die-off of indie bookstores and newsracks (I used to sell 2600 when I was a bookseller, and in the years after, I always took the presence of 2600 on a store's newsrack as an unimpeachable mark of quality).
Thankfully for 2600, their audience is (unsurprisingly) a tech-savvy one, so they were able to substitute digital subscriptions for physical ones:
https://www.2600.com/Magazine/DigitalEditions
Of course, many of those subscriptions came through Amazon's Kindle, because nerds were early Amazon adopters, and because the Kindle magazine publishing platform offered DRM-free distribution to subscribers along with a fair payout to publishers.
But then Amazon enshittified its magazine system. Having locked publishers to its platform, it rugged them and killed the monthly subscription fees that allowed publishers to plan for a steady output. Publishers were given a choice: leave Amazon (and all the readers locked inside its walled garden) or put your magazine into the Kindle Unlimited system:
https://www.amazon.com/kindle-dbs/arp/B0BWPTCP4K?deviceType=A1FG5NAKX0MRJL
Kindle Unlimited is an all-you-can-eat program for Kindle, which pays publishers and writers based on a system that is both opaque and easily gamed, with the lion's share of the money going to "publishers" who focus on figuring out how to cheat the algorithm. Revenues for 2600 – and all the other magazines that Amazon had sucked in and sucked dry – fell off a cliff.
Which brings me to the present moment. After 40 years, 2600 is still at it, having survived the bookstorepocalypse, the lunacy of public radio management, the literal demolition of their physical home by an evil real-estate developer, and Amazon's crooked accounting.
This is 2600, circa 2024, and 2024 a HOPE year:
https://www.hope.net/
Once again, HOPE has been scheduled for its new digs in Queens, July 12-14. Last week, HOPE sent out an email blast to their subscribers telling them the news. They expected to sell 500 tickets in the first 24 hours. They didn't even come close:
https://www.2600.com/content/hope-ticket-sales-update
It turns out that Google and the other major mail providers don't like emails with the word "hacker" in them. The cartel that decides which email gets delivered, and which messages go to spam, or get blocked altogether, mass-blocked the HOPE 2024 announcement. Email may be the last federated, open platform we have, but mass concentration has created a system where it's nearly impossible to get your email delivered unless you're willing to play by Gmail's rules:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/10/10/dead-letters/
For Emmanuel Goldstein, founder of 2600 and tireless toiler for this community, the deafening silence following from that initial email volley was terrifying: "like some kind of a "Twilight Zone" episode where everyone has disappeared."
The enshittification that keeps 2600's emails from being delivered to the people who asked to receive them is even worse on social media. Social media companies routinely defraud their users by letting them subscribe to feeds, then turning around to the people and organizations that run those feeds and saying, "You've got x thousand subscribers on this platform, but we won't put your posts in their feeds unless you pay us to 'boost' your content":
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/04/platforms-decay-lets-put-users-first
Enshittification has been coming at 2600 for decades. Like other forms of oddball media dedicated to challenging corporate power and government oppression, 2600 has always been a ten-years-ahead preview of the way the noose was gonna tighten on all of us. And now, they're on the ropes. HOPE can't sell tickets unless people know about HOPE, and neither email providers nor social media platforms have any interest in making that happen.
A handful of giant corporations now get to decide what we read, who we hear from, and whether and how we can get together in person to make friends, forge community, rabble-rouse and change the world. The idea that "it's not censorship unless the government does it" has always been wrong (not all censorship violates the First Amendment, and censorship can be real without being unconstitutional):
https://pluralistic.net/2022/12/04/yes-its-censorship/
What can you do about it? Well, for one thing, you can sign up for HOPE. It's gonna be great. They've got sub-$100 hotel rooms! In New York City!
https://store.2600.com/products/tickets-to-hope-xv
If you can't make it to HOPE, you can sign up for a virtual membership:
https://store.2600.com/products/tickets-to-hope-xv-virtual-attendee
You can submit a talk to HOPE:
https://www.hope.net/cfp.html
You can subscribe to 2600, in print or electronically (I signed up for the lifetime print subscription and it was a bargain – I devour every issue the day it arrives):
https://store.2600.com/collections/subscriptions-renewals
2600 is living a decade in the future of every other community you care about, weird hobby you enjoy, con you live for, and publication you read from cover to cover. If we can all pull together to save it, it'll be a beacon of hope (and HOPE).
I'm Kickstarting the audiobook for The Bezzle, the sequel to Red Team Blues, narrated by @wilwheaton! You can pre-order the audiobook and ebook, DRM free, as well as the hardcover, signed or unsigned. There's also bundles with Red Team Blues in ebook, audio or paperback.

I dare you to do one with your favorite trope to write (unless you've already done it)
Oh my goodness, this might be longer that usual. XD
And I really had to think about what I wanted to write. I think I'll make this a one-shot. (unless you guys want more anyway) Prepare for this to be as self indulgent as hell. :D
And I'll make it Time while I'm at it.

Content under the cut!
This was the third time this week that you found something like this. You didn't know who was doing this.
A basket, filled to the brim with goodies and trinkets alike, sat properly outside of your window sill. It would be charming if you weren't on the third floor. Someone was climbing up to your balcony and leaving the baskets for you to find.
It was creepy- to a degree. There was never anything malicious about it though. The baskets typically held a flower, a warm meal (or groceries) and some little thing for you to put around your apartment.
You see, you moved to the Kingdom of Kokiri with nothing but a backpack and small child's wagon. Your apartment wasn't even on a nicer side of town. But it hard to be worried about robbers when you're home is bare and empty.
Slowly, that's been changing though. The baskets always had a poem attached, but no name. You secret admirer would give little things from time to time. The baskets are getting more frequent too.
What used to be a small monthly thing, turned weekly then bi weekly- and you're beginning to suspect that they're turning into a daily thing.
Part of you worries that whoever this is, is spending too much on you.
But seeing that the last basket had a new set of dining wear with plates and cups and a some nice utensils to match- you're not inclined to have them stop anytime soon when they're improve your very living conditions as it is. Even if you feel a little guilty.
That being said, this basket had a warm meal already prepared, still steaming in the glass tupperware. There was a small bouquet of roses near the top and a small little box that you opened to see a single slice of chocolate cake.
The card was attached on the inside but it lacked the typical poem. It simple read: "Rest well, Love. You've worked hard today. Dinner's on me. I just want to see you smile in the morning."
You smiles and tucked the card back into its place, bringing the basket back into your apartment.
You have to figure out who this secret admirer of yours is. It has to be someone with access to your floor but it can't be a neighbor. Right? You're on the corner so it can't be anyone to your left. But maybe your neighbor to the right? That's a creepy thought. You hardy ever see him and you don't think he showers throughout the week.
It can't be him. Or at least you're going to deny it.
Maybe it's someone from above? That's more likely. There is this cute guy that you know lives on the floor above you, but you don't know which apartment. It wouldn't be hard to drop the basket secretively onto your balcony from above if that was the case.
The thought rotates in your head as you eat the food. It's delicious. Decadent, even.
Gratitude fills your heart and soul. you have to return the favor somehow after everything this person has provided for you. But how?
You head to bed with a smile on your face and a full stomach. You'll have to start small but you can think of something.
The next morning you head to the castle and walk straight to the throne room.
It was a deal that the king had proposed personally to you. You get to work concern free in his kingdom but you have to report to him every other Tuesday. Seeing as you had nowhere else to go, you didn't think it wise to refuse.
You've grown somewhat close, but with his power and status by his side, you couldn't help but slightly intimidated by him even now.
The king- like most Royals of Kingdoms of Hyrule- was a dragon. Sure, he could take the form of a typical man, but he stayed in his half form more often than not. His age and strength add to his credentials. As the current senior amongst dragons, all you've gathered is that he's lived longer than he appears. The older the dragon, the stronger they are.
King Link is a force to be reckoned with.
However, he's kind and patient with you. He's not all that bad.
You nod and grin at the Captain, who's affectionately called Warrior. Another dragon hidden among the people. You don't know his story, but he's a hard working fellow. He also came to the king in a time of need, looking for asylum and has been working under his employ ever since. He is the king's right hand man.
Warrior smiles back and salutes you softly as you enter. You'll never understand why you've more or less been given free reign of the castle, but with his approval, you feel better to head on in.
You meet the king and curtsy clumsily, still feeling rushed. He's asked you call him Time and he stands from the throne. His face is kind, amused even. A chuckle tumbles out of him as he walks toward you, his marble like tail swinging behind him. "I thought we were passed the formalities, my dear."
You clear your throat. "Were we? I don't recall."
He laughs again. "Come. We have much to discuss."
You nod and follow. He leads you to the back room with a gentle touch the small of your back. It's a familiar routine that you've grown comfortable with.
There's a small rounded table with a pale blue laced table cloth. There's a delicate tea set and it's covered to the brim with snacks and treats alike. You think you see a few of your favorites and your eyes light up at the sight.
King Time notices and he smiles, pleased. "Sit."
You nod and take your usual spot. Time sits across from you and serves you the pieces that you eyes earlier. You almost feel bad. You're still full from the night before.
Time notices. "Something wrong, dear?"
"No." You shake your head, afraid of insulting him. "Someone gave me dinner last night and I'm still a bit full from it."
Time seemed to be shocked by the tidbit. "Really?... Was it good?"
"It was delicious!" You can't help but gush. "I would normally cook for myself but they send food from time to time and it was still warm so I couldn't resist."
His smile turns a little tight. "Is that so? I'm glad that you were fed adequately then.... May I ask who?"
You falter, the smile on your face turning more soft and shy. "Um... I think it was my neighbor..."
"...You don't know who it is?"
You blush and look down onto the table, playing with the treats on your plate. "I know that I should be more cautious. But they've only ever left it on my balcony... It's a secret admirer so to speak. They've given me trinkets and flowers and food. It seems as if they've slowly been furnishing my house for me. I don't know... I've been trying to think about who it may be, but I'm coming up short. Regardless, enough about my lack of love life-"
Time abruptly puts his hand under the table but you catch the reason why before he can hide it.
He's bent the fork in half with his hand, seemingly without realizing it. He smiles brightly, as if nothing happened and the thought gets put on the back burner for now. "Right... Well, you can always ask for my assistance, Darling."
You shake your head with a small smile. "Thank you, but I'm here to report my work. Let's get to business then."
Time clenches his jaw slightly but nods in agreement. "Right. I believe last time you mentioned that you were following a trail of some suspicious individuals on the property of the farm lands for relief efforts. Did that bloom into anything substantial?"
You pull out a manila folder with a smirk and hand it to the king. "Did it ever."
The time passes before you know it. Little by little, as you give your report, if drifts away and you're talking about your lives as much as you can before you leave.
Warrior comes in, informing Time of another meeting has to attend. He looks apologetic.
The king winces but you're quick to stand up, mid panic. "I'm sorry. I've overstayed my welcome."
"Impossible." Time blurts, standing abruptly as well. He reach out as if to stop you and moves around the table as if to block your path. His tail curls around your ankle, stopping your in your tracks. It's gentle but firm. Even if his grip is painless, you can already tell that you wouldn't be able to escape on your own.
You freeze and after a beat he lets you go. Time gulps and stands, seemingly more aware of what he was doing. His grip falls away and he takes a step back. "R-right... I won't keep you from your work much longer then."
You can't help but blush. He's always been fine with putting a hand on your shoulder or your back... but the tail is one of the most sensitive parts of a dragon. And he just grabbed you with it. For some reason, you find yourself blushing.
You nod dumbly, as if your schedule is jammed packed like his. Your heart is pounding. You follow Warrior out of the room as he leads you back to the main gate of the castle.
"Sorry." Warrior says quietly. "I didn't mean to interrupt."
"Nonono-" You're still shaken by the phantom feelings of the scales around you. Even if it was just a brush, there was a power there. You don't know why you're so out of whack suddenly. The act was more intimate than you were able to admit. "If you didn't say anything, I would have kept going. Honestly, I swear he's just humoring most of the time."
"This is the only time we get him to actually take a break." Warrior tells you. "He'd work himself t the bone if it weren't for you. It's not like he can't afford it. He's two years ahead of his work. By all means, keep him there longer."
You flush and look away, walking out of the gate. "Oh please, he'll get sick of me before we'd know it."
Warrior is quick to bite his tongue, biting back the instant retort that no doubt sat on his tongue. He takes a breath and shakes his head.
"...He likes you." Warrior looks pained. Like there's something there that he wants to say but can't. You don't see it. "Would you like me to walk you home? If I recall you live far enough away-"
"Not enough to cause concern, Captain." You smile and pat his shoulder. "But thank you."
"His Majesty wouldn't like it if anything happened to you." Warrior tries to push it a little bit.
You shake you head. "And take more of your time away? You work just as hard, if not harder, than the entirety of the castle staff. I think only the King works harder than you."
He presses his lips into a thin line. His own scales poke from under his skin. Something is riling him up but you don't know what. You've never seen his dragon form or even his half. He seems to hide it more often than not. You would never know he was a dragon if the King hadn't said anything earlier.
Warrior sighs and runs his hands through his hair. "Very well... Just... be safe, yeah? I don't think the goddesses themselves would be able to calm the king should things go wrong."
"Like what?" You snort. "I end up in the hospital? I'll be fine. No worries."
You wink for good measure and head home, happy, fulfilled and ready to take on the rest of the week.
You miss the next three visits.

Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week. #5
Feb 9-16 2024
The Department of Education released the first draft for a wide ranging student loan forgiveness plan. After Biden's first attempt at student debt forgiveness was struck down at the Supreme Court in 2023, this new plan is an attempt to replace it with something that will hold up in court. The plan hopes to forgive debt for anyone facing "financial hardship" which has been as broadly defined as possible. Another part of the plan hopes to eliminate $10-20,000 in interest from all student loans, as well as a wide ranging public Information push to inform people of other forgiveness programs they qualify for but don't know about.
The House passed 1.2 Billion Dollars to combat human trafficking, including $175 million in housing assistance to human trafficking victims
The Department of Transportation announced $970 Million for improvements at 114 airports across 44 states and 3 territories. They include $40 million to O'Hare International in Chicago to improve passenger experience by reconfiguring TSA and baggage claims, and installing ADA compliant bathrooms(!). The loans will also go to connecting airports to mass transit, boosted sustainability, installing solar and wind power, and expanding service to under served committees around the country.
Medicare & Medicaid released new guidelines to allow people to pay out of pocket prescription drug coats in monthly installments rather than as a lump sum. This together with capping the price of certain drugs and penalties for drug companies that rise prices over inflation is expected to save the public millions on drug coasts and assure people don't pass on a prescription because they can't pay upfront
The EPA announced its adding 150 more communities to its Closing America's Wastewater Access Gap Community Initiative. 2.2 Million Americans do not have basic running water and indoor plumbing. Broken and unreliable wastewater infrastructure exposed many of those to dangerous raw sewage. These Americans live primarily in poor and rural communities, many predominantly Black communities in the south as well as those on tribal lands. The program is aiming to close the wastewater gap and insure all Americans have access to reliable clear water.
The White House announced deferred action for Palestinians in the US. This means any Palestinian living in the United States, no mater their legal status, can not be deported for any reason for the next 18 months.
The Department of Energy announced $60 million in investment into clean geothermal energy. The plan will hopefully lead to a 90% decrease in the coasts of geothermal. DOE estimates hold that geothermal might be able to power the hopes of 65 million Americans by 2050 making it a key step in the Biden administration plan for a carbon-free grid by 2035 and net-zero emissions by 2050.
The EPA launched $83 million to help improve air quality monitoring across America. With updated equipment local agencies will be better able to report on air quality, give more localized reports of bad air quality and the country will be better equipped to start mitigating the problem
The Department of Energy announced $63 million in investments in domestic heat-pump manufacturing. Studies have shown that heat-pumps reduce green house gases by 50% over the most efficient condensing gas boilers, as technology improves this could rise to 75% by 2030. Heat pump water heaters meanwhile are 2 to 3 times as energy efficient as conventional electric water heaters.
HHS awarded $5.1 million to organizations working with LGBTQI+ Youth and their Families. The programs focus on preventing homelessness, fighting depression and suicide, drug use and HIV prevention and treatment, as well as family counseling and support interventions tailored for LGBTQI+ families.
The House passed two bills in support of the oppressed Uyghur minority in China. The "No Dollars To Uyghur Forced Labor" Act would prohibit the US government from spending any money on projects that source materials from Xinjiang. The Uyghur Policy Act would create a permanent post at the State Department to coordinate policy on Uyghur Issues, much like the special ambassador on antisemitism.

PIGEON HRT: Part 4
》~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~《
MONTH 4
[Patient Checkup Report, from the office of M. Washington M.D.]
Today is the fourth monthly checkup for “Pigeon” [LEGAL NAME REDACTED].
Pigeon (as it would like to be called from now on), has been taking an experimental variation of HRT, or Humanity Removal Therapy, for the last four months. This has been undertaken with the goal of transforming her into an anthropomorphic pigeon-human hybrid. Notes on its transition status are as follows;
Physical Changes
The most notable change so far is the patient’s feather development. The quill growth was noted extensively in its last visit, but they have sprouted and developed barbs and barbicels at an unprecedented rate. Many of the patient’s primary feathers have now fully formed, and the amount of bare skin visible is decreasing daily.
I expressed my concerns about this quickened pace of transition, and suggested that the dosage be lowered, but the patient says it prefers these fast changes. As long as there is no physical danger in this dosage, I will follow the patient’s wishes.
The shape and structure of Pigeon’s skull has begun shifting, with the beginnings of a beak evident around its mouth. The patient has described a dull, ache of a pain, but says it is nothing she “can’t handle”. I have prescribed her low strength painkillers as a precaution, as the discomfort is likely to increase steadily as the beak takes shape.
The patient has also described “weird” feelings in its arm joints, likely the start of wing formation. According to measurements, its arms have grown roughly 3 inches longer since the last visit, and close observation shows that thick flaps of skin are developing between the patient's forearms and brachia. I have made a note to monitor this area closely in future visits.
Mental Changes
Going through the mental changes with Pigeon has been a somewhat complex process; many inherent species instincts have appeared, and, rather than directly questioning them, the patient seems to accept them with little to no thought or anxieties. This is obviously the ideal way for mental shifts to happen in an animal transition, but it does make cataloguing individual changes rather challenging at times.
One such example is, Pigeon neglected to mention her new, more intense nesting instincts until near the end of the visit, when she casually mentioned stopping at a store to acquire new components for her nest on her way home.
After some directed questions, the patient also spoke about its recent, heavier prey instincts. These included deep discomfort and anxiety around large cats and birds of prey, as well as increased feelings of safety in higher, secluded spaces.
A change that she did take direct note of, however, is the newfound desire to consume insects. She phrased her discomfort with the idea as “being a bit weirded out”, but after some advising, she stated that she would try incorporating them into her diet. I have made a note to ask about progress on this during its next visit.
Overall, Pigeon reports that she is feeling happy, and optimistic about these changes. Its transition is coming along very smoothly, and I see no need to change any medications or schedule additional checkups on top of the current monthly plan.

Many deaths attributed to natural causes during the COVID-19 pandemic may have instead been due to the virus - Published Oct 24, 2024
Fun Fact: This is still happening. This is what the "with or from covid" debate wanted to achieve. This is statistical cherry-picking that allows them to say "the pandemic is over" even as it rages on.
Several studies have found that mortality increased at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. While many of these excess deaths — higher than would be expected based on mortality patterns in earlier times — during the first 30 months of the pandemic were officially linked to COVID-19, a substantial number were reported as other natural causes. The timing suggests that many of these deaths could have been unrecognized COVID-19 fatalities or indirectly linked to pandemic-related disruptions in health care and society. Findings from an NIA-funded study exploring this question were published in PNAS.
To understand how COVID-19 death counts reflect the true impact of the pandemic, a team led by scientists from the University of Pennsylvania, Boston University, and collaborative institutions studied excess mortality from natural causes, i.e., diseases and chronic conditions. Calculations of excess mortality are used to measure the impact of COVID-19 on deaths. Between March 2020 and August 2022, the U.S. had nearly 1.2 million more deaths than expected, with approximately 635,000 in the first year and 544,000 in the second year. Previous studies found that these excess deaths were higher than the reported COVID-19 deaths, but most of that earlier research investigated extra deaths from all causes. In this new study, the scientists focused on natural causes of death, which may provide a better estimate of unacknowledged COVID-19 deaths.
The researchers employed innovative statistical techniques to examine monthly Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data on natural-cause deaths and reported COVID-19 fatalities across 3,127 counties spanning the first 30 months of the pandemic, March 2020 to August 2022. Their analysis revealed approximately 1.2 million more natural-cause deaths than expected during this period. Of these deaths, nearly 163,000 did not have a COVID-19 notation on their death certificates. The largest gaps between these excess deaths and reported COVID-19 deaths were in rural areas, the West, and the South.
Increases in reported COVID-19 deaths often coincided with increases in excess natural-cause deaths, but many of the natural-cause ones were likely unrecognized COVID-19 deaths. The correlation between COVID-19 deaths and excess natural-cause deaths suggests that health care delays and social and economic impacts of the pandemic were not the main reasons for these excess deaths. For example, in areas where a greater proportion of excess deaths were assigned to natural causes, there may have been more unrecognized COVID-19 deaths due to less testing, more deaths outside hospitals, and less experienced death investigators. Some areas, such as New England and the mid-Atlantic metropolitan counties, had fewer excess natural-cause deaths compared to reported COVID-19 deaths, possibly due to declines in other causes of death (influenza, for example) due to COVID prevention policies and greater ability to work from home in some more economically privileged counties, or different reporting standards.
Limitations of the study include the inability to know for certain if the excess natural-cause deaths were due to unrecognized COVID-19 cases or were related to health care interruptions and social and economic impacts from the pandemic. In addition, while death counts were final for 2020 and 2021, the data for 2022 was still provisional. Future research should differentiate unrecognized COVID-19 deaths from other causes and examine the differences based on individual factors, such as age, gender, race, and socioeconomic status, as well as access to health insurance and primary care. Overall, this study helps improve understanding of the pandemic’s true impact and may guide better public health responses and improvements in death investigation systems.
This research was supported in part by NIA grant R01AG060115.

The Best News of Last Week - March 6, 2023
🐎 - News That'll Make You Say "Neigh" to Negativity: My Weekly Positive Roundup
1. Drugmaker Eli Lilly caps the cost of insulin at $35 a month, bringing relief for millions
Eli Lilly will cap the out-of-pocket cost of its insulin at $35 a month, the drugmaker said Wednesday. The move could prompt other insulin makers in the U.S. to follow suit.
The change, which Eli Lilly said takes effect immediately, puts the drugmaker in line with a provision in the Inflation Reduction Act, which in January imposed a $35 monthly cap on the out-of-pocket cost of insulin for seniors enrolled in Medicare.
2. Over 7,500 Pot Convictions Expunged in Missouri
More than 7,500 individuals in Missouri have had their prior marijuana-related convictions expunged with recreational cannabis now legal in the state.
The expungement is the latest byproduct of the constitutional amendment that was approved by Missouri voters last fall, which legalized pot for adults and cleared the way for Missourians to have their records cleared.
3. Scientists cure 22 year old former race horse's behavioral disorders after 15 years of symptoms
A team of international researchers from Italy and Brazil published findings earlier this month in the science publication Veterinary and Animal Science in which they reported a “successful outcome of four weeks-therapy with CBD” in a clinical case involving a 22-year-old Quarter horse that was experiencing behavioral disorders.
The clinical case study was a collaboration between investigators from the Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences at the University of Bologna in Italy and the Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences at the University Metodista of São Paulo in Brazil. At the heart of the study was a 22-year-old mare subject that was reportedly suffering from “chronic crib-biting and wind-sucking,” which are common behavioral disorders in horses for various reasons, including but not limited to poor welfare
4. Clean energy record: More than 40% of US electricity now comes from carbon-free sources
Power from zero-carbon sources made up a full 41% of the U.S. electricity mix in 2022, a record-breaking number that has increased almost every year since 1990.
That mix includes power from nuclear plants, hydroelectric dams, solar and wind. With nuclear and hydropower relatively unchanged for years at about 19% and 10% respectively, the majority of the increase has come from the rapid build-out of solar and wind power, whose costs have plummeted in the past two decades.
5. ‘Cruelty-free’ circus replaced animals with holograms
youtube
Holograms of horses run in circles. The Circus Roncalli stopped using wild animals in its shows in the 1990s. Circus Roncalli was among the first circus acts in Europe to stop using animals in acts.
6. New UN brokered High Seas Treaty Places 30% of Ocean into protected areas by 2030 after decades of talks
The High Seas Treaty places 30% of the seas into protected areas by 2030, aiming to safeguard and recuperate marine nature.
The agreement was reached on Saturday evening, after 38 hours of talks, at UN headquarters in New York. The negotiations had been held up for years over disagreements on funding and fishing rights.

Xavier Student Paper: Issue #2
A return, and a dissapearence: Where is Gwen?
A few nights ago on a job, a friend of the Union; Miss Gwen Poole [ AKA; Gwenpool] dissapeared after reportedly being shot while working one of her jobs. Naturally, her line of work is incredibily dangerous and not without risks, and so this isn't the first time she's been injured. However, Miss.Pool is an active member or the community of heroes and anti-heroes and often interacts in person and through a newly popular medium for those in the buisenss of wearing poor fighting spandex and fighting people; known as Tumblr.
And more importantly, her beloved Jeff is currently being cared for not by Gwen...but by Scraps.
If anybody, anybody at all has any tips or leads to help confirm her status; if not her whereabouts. Please contact Deanne, at the numbers printed in the back of the issue
[ Relevent parties: @gwenpooleoffish , @scraps-stark ]
A Warm Welcome To our New Friend;
Since 2020, Eel has been somewhat off grid due to the outbreak of Corona Virus. Living off the shores in an old house boat, They have decided to make their return to mutant society by enrolling in the Xavier's adult courses; albeit in the medium of online school. We wish Eel a swift and smooth transition back into our community, and we hope you all here at the institute will treat them with warmth and kindness.
On that note, we'd like to officially remind folks that the institute in recent years doesn't just teach children, and prospective X-men. They offer degrees in unrelated subjects. For example, they are currently offering a Pre-Med course which is valid to get you into a medical programme upon graduation. Adult courses also include a dormitory that provides free housing, but with more privacy than the regular dorms inside the manor.

Jasper's Monthly Spending Spree
As you all have probabaly heard, or even seen in our numerous posters around the building; it's that time of the month where Jasper takes the money his father forces on him and uses it to fund Pro-Mutant charities and campaigns. Aside from that, Jasper offers to buy everyone a gift.
If you're in need of anything, big or small please remember to contact him.
He's easy to find, as he practically lives in the library and club room.
Also, outside of his monthly spree he'd like to remind everyone that he's happy to step in and aid fellow students whose families may be falling behind with necessary payments. He has more money than he'd ever know what to do with. And, we're the worst to happen he has enough assets unrelated to his father that he would be able to live on. Though, jasper has asked I don't disclose anything more than that.
Extraterrestrial Cultural Exchange Club Event cancelled.
As forseen in last issue, it turns out that those "genuine" alien artefacts that the club leader promised were obtained legally and peacefully were in fact smuggled from the black market. As such, the event has been cancelled and all knowledgable parties have been barred from future club gatherings, participation and are receiving in school punishment.
All Alien artefacts gave been reappropriated to be returned to their rightful owners thanks to the work of Jean Grey, and Jasper. If you, or a family member have been impacted or believe your items to be missing please file a report with us and we will see to it that justice [ and your things return] be served.
Father and Daughter finally Talk; Everyone is pleased.
As of yesterday evening, Aranza Martinez and her Father; James Logan Howlett [AKA Wolverine] have had their talk. And while they're still figuring things out, they've both accepted that they want to be in each other's life. So, I hope everyone can join me in wishing them well.
It may be a long road to complete understanding, but hopefully with proper support and communication this could be the start of a fruitful, and happy parenting experience for a member of the xmen. So long as the mansion doesn't blow up.
Again.

Executive summary
Since launching its brutal war of aggression against Ukraine in February 2022, the Russian Federation has been locked into a long and costly conflict. Russia has been diplomatically marginalized, subjected to sanctions, and shunned by most of the Western world. Many multinational companies have been forced by international pressure to shutter or sell their Russian operations, and profiting from cooperation with the Russian state is no longer considered acceptable. Russia has found itself in dire need of new allies and resources.
In this environment, the Kremlin-financed Private Military Company Wagner, or Wagner Group, has served as an increasingly important source of revenue for the Russian state. Founded in 2014 to support pro-Russian forces in Donbas, since then Wagner Group has evolved into a complex international network of private military contractors, disinformation campaign infrastruc-ture, and corporate front companies. It has deployed fighters, propaganda and disinformation campaigns, and financing as a proxy for the Russian state in numerous conflicts, from Syria and Libya to Mali, Central African Republic, and beyond
Wagner has most often been described as an independent mercenary group. This status has provided Russia with a thin veil of deniability, particularly in relation to the numerous plausible accusations of murder, rape, torture, and war crimes raised against Wagner fighters. But in reality, Wagner has always operated with the political and material backing of the Russian Federation to advance Russian state interests.
In Africa, Wagner has been deployed in a number of countries across the continent since 2017. In each country it enters, Wagner deploys military trainers, mercenary fighters, and propaganda experts to support anti-democratic regimes, drive instability, and commit human rights abuses. The mercenary group's ostensible provision of "security services" creates a framework for lucrative business contracts for the extraction of natural resources including diamonds, oil, timber, and especially gold.
This report focuses on the Kremlin's 'blood gold': Gold extracted from African countries and laundered into international markets that provides billions in revenue to the Russian state, thereby directly and indirectly financing Russia's war on Ukraine and global hybrid warfare infrastructure.
The Blood Gold Report's analysis suggests that Wagner and Russia have earned more than US$2.5 billion from blood gold since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The report focuses on the case studies of Wagner's blood gold operations in the Central African Republic, Sudan, and Mali. In each of these coun-tries, Russia profits from the blood gold trade in different ways:
In CAR, the mercenary group has been granted exclusive extractive rights for the Ndassima mine, the country's largest gold mine, in return for propping up President Touadera's authoritarian regime. Wagner's Ndassima operations are understood to produce US$290 million of gold annually, while local miners have been pushed aside or murdered by the mercenary group.
In Sudan, through control of a major refinery, Wagner has become the dominant buyer of unprocessed Sudanese gold as well as a major smuggler of processed gold. Russian military transporter flights laden with gold have been identified by Sudanese customs officials. While tracking Sudan's unreported gold market is near impossible, estimates suggest that almost Us$2 billion in gold is smuggled out of the country unreported every year, with 'the Russian Company' in prime position to take advantage.
In Mali, Wagner is paid a monthly retainer - estimated at US $10.8 million per month - to prop up a brutal military junta Meanwhile the junta is in turn dependent on a small number of Western mining companies for the revenue it needs to pay Wagner. Mining companies contributed more than 50% of all tax revenues to the Malian state for 2022. Barrick Gold Corporation, a Canadian listed company and Mali's single biggest tax contributor, paid US$206 million in the first half of 2023 alone.
The junta is increasing its financial demands on gold mining companies. Meanwhile, the four largest gold mining companies (weighted by tax contribution) continue to plan further investments in the country, despite the well-documented abuses of the military junta and growing influence of the Wagner Group.
Wagner's blood gold operations in CAR and Sudan have been subject to sanctions, and the Kremlin-backed mercenaries have developed increasingly complex smuggling routes and corporate subterfuge tactics to move blood gold out of these countries and convert this gold into cash.
In contrast, the Malian blood gold system enables Wagner to remain one degree removed from gold production. Instead, legitimate multinational mining companies convert gold into cash for the Malian military junta without triggering international sanctions.
To secure its position in a target country's political and natural resource extraction landscape, Wagner's African playbook consists of a four-pronged attack on the host country's civic institutions and civilian population - suppressing political opposition, spreading disinformation, silencing free media and terrorising civilians.
The ultimate objective of Wagner's playbook is to increase its clients' dependence on Wagner forces to stay in power, thereby securing a long-term revenue stream for the Kremlin and fostering authoritarianism and instability throughout the region as part of Russia's wider geopolitical strategy to distract and bog down the democratic West.
Since the death of Wagner's leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, the mercenary group has formally come under the control of the Russian State. Yet the Kremlin's focus on Africa, and its blood gold operations, show no signs of changing.

Bull Horns and Webbed Hands (Ch. 1)
Summary: Since Percy became an instructor at camp, he knew first hand how stressful it was to be in charge of the health and safety of over a hundred demigods. Which was why he offered to travel to Olympus in Chiron's place to give the Olympians the monthly camp status report. All he had wanted to do was give Chiron the day off. He hadn't planned for anything exciting happening. He certainly hadn't planned on accidentally adopting the Ophiotaurus while he was there. As usual, nothing ever goes as planned for Percy Jackson.
A/N: My first Percy Jackson fanfiction! AKA I think Bessie is an absolutely adorable, totally underutilized character (His AO3 tag only has 16 fics as of me posting this, which is criminal)
(Read on AO3)
~~~
The monthly status report on Camp Half Blood had been going well. Chiron had coached Percy on how the report usually went, and he was well acquainted with the finer details of how the camp was run nowadays. He’d always been highly involved in the happenings at camp, and since he had become a permanent instructor several years ago, he’d become even more knowledgeable.
A few members of the Olympian council might have been pressing him harder and asking more questions about camp than they usually would have asked Chiron, but he hadn’t faltered under their scrutiny. He knew it was a test to see if he was really capable, and unlike the other times the gods had tested him, Percy didn’t mind too much.
He’d also managed to keep all of his sharper comments to himself, which was impressive for him. His relationship with most of the gods had gotten a lot more civil over the years, even to the point of friendliness in many cases, but there were still a few he would fight if given half the chance.
He'd nearly finished his report when he was interrupted by the sound of a strange squeal and the sound of wet feet slapping loudly against bare marble approaching him quickly. The unexpected noise made Percy, who was already on edge after being grilled by the council for the past hour, instinctively tense up and reach for Riptide.
Logically, he knew that he couldn’t be in any true danger. He was standing in the throne room of the gods. No monster could possibly make their way all the way through Olympus without being spotted and killed on sight.
Even if one had somehow managed to sneak through the city, the gods wouldn’t allow it to kill Percy. Having a hero of Olympus attacked and killed in their own throne room by a lowly monster would be very embarrassing.
So Percy knew it probably wasn't a monster running at him, but he hadn't gotten this far in life as a demigod by not taking potential threats seriously.
He spun around with Riptide already in his grasp. Despite his fast reflexes, he didn’t have time to uncap his sword before a figure no taller than his waist barreled into his legs and clung to him with a tiny cry of “Percy!”
The familiar feeling made him drop his sword and immediately switch from ‘potential threat running toward me’ mode to ‘small child hugging me’ mode. He was more than used to being clung to by young children, thanks to Estelle and the younger kids at camp.
After a second to collect himself and relax his tensed muscles, Percy ran his hands through the kid’s thick hair, gently coaxing them to release him and take a step backward so he could get a good look at them and maybe get a clue as to why on earth they were in the throne room.
The kid was probably five years old, maybe a little younger given how small they were. They wore a white tunic that was cinched around the waist with a golden rope, and no shoes. The tunic was completely soaked with water. In fact, the entire kid was strangely wet. Their skin was a shade or two darker than Percy’s own, and their long black hair tumbled down their back in gorgeous curls. The bangs curling on either side of the kid’s face were pure white, a shock against their dark complexion.
Percy was confused and slightly disturbed by how similar the kid looked to himself. He’d seen the baby pictures his mother had of him, and this kid could have been his twin, if Percy had grown out his hair and been forced to take the weight of the sky at the ripe age of four. A thought grew in the back of his mind that if he ever had children, they might look similar to this child. Percy did his best to ignore the thought, even though it filled him with warmth.
The only differences were the fact that this kid was clearly not human, and their eyes.
Percy also wasn’t human, but you would be hard-pressed to tell from simply looking at him. By contrast, this kid reminded him more of young satyr kids than human children. Two curved cream-colored bull horns poked out of the child’s curls. They were just barely visible, but already sharp and dangerous.
Their fingers ended in hard nails, too blunt to be claws but too hard to be normal. Their hands were webbed, and Percy could see slits that were clearly gills on the sides of the kid’s neck. He would bet anything that if he were to take off the kid’s tunic, he would find matching slits on the sides of their torso. Their feet were covered in iridescent black scales that trailed up their calves and disappeared before they reached their knees.
And then there were the eyes. Staring up at him from a sweet face were two beautiful chocolate brown eyes that made Percy want to melt into a puddle. Their pupils were horizontal, which Percy was so used to after years of looking at satyrs that he almost didn’t notice.
But those eyes were familiar. He’d seen them, not thirty minutes earlier, in fact, when he’d stopped to say hello to Bessie before the gods officially convened for council.
Percy gasped in realization.
“Bessie?” The whispered word echoed through the utterly silent throne room.
He felt stupid for even suggesting it, but a quick glance at Bessie’s aquarium showed no sign of the creature, there was a trail of water leading from the tanks to where the child was standing, and the eyes that stared up at him from the child’s face were hauntingly familiar.
The little boy nodded vigorously at him, seemingly incredibly pleased that Percy recognized him. He raised his arms in the universal demand to be picked up, and Percy complied entirely on autopilot, picking the kid up from under his arms and hoisting him up onto his hip.
A long moment of silence stretched on as everyone in the room processed what was happening. “Ah,” Percy said, lacking anything better to say, “I… did not know you could shapeshift.”
“I didn’t either!” The boy wiggled with excitement. “I’ve never gotten this big before, so I never had the chance to try!”
That thought smothered any happy feelings fluttering in Percy’s chest as he clutched the child tighter.
Right. Bessie had never had that chance to grow up before, because every time he’d been reborn, the gods had hunted him down and slaughtered him before he could be sacrificed in a bid to overthrow them.
Percy was suddenly hit with the memory of the first time he’d met Bessie, and how the Ophiotaurus had flinched away from Riptide. He’d been so panicked he’d gotten himself even more tangled in the fishing net he’d been caught in. The thought of any child being so afraid of weapons even when they weren’t being brandished threateningly made Percy burn with anger at the gods.
Anger at the gods wasn’t a foreign feeling for Percy, but not something he could indulge in right now. He was standing in front of the Olympian council, holding a child who needed his protection. He couldn’t afford to get angry, not when it was more than his own safety at stake.
The gods had nearly killed Bessie only a few years before. The fact that Bessie could now shapeshift into a human was a strange new development. He was clearly no longer a mindless beast, if he ever was to begin with, and he could act independently. It was something no one had expected and it was entirely possible it would make the gods reconsider their decision to not kill him.
Percy wouldn’t let them do that. He’d fought against the idea years ago, and he would fight even harder now. This wasn’t a random sea creature anymore. This was a child. A clearly sentient child. If the gods dared to debate on whether or not to kill him in front of Percy, he was going to do something drastic.
The thought of the gods made Percy realize that none of them had said a single word since Bessie had appeared. He looked up toward the thrones, not sure what to expect, but it definitely wasn’t what he found.
The gods, every single one of them, looked frozen in varying degrees of shock. Apollo’s mouth was hanging open in a rather ungraceful manner, his sunglasses falling down his nose to expose eyes wide in surprise. Artemis’ expression mirrored the sun god’s with such precision it forcibly reminded Percy that the two of them were indeed twins, despite their differing personalities. Athena had gone completely still on her throne and the only sign she was alive was her wide-eyed gaze tracking Bessie’s every move.
Poseidon was no exception to the shock, staring openly at Percy and Bessie as if they’d both grown second heads. Although Percy supposed Bessie had technically just grown a human head, so that wasn’t totally out of line.
Which, hold on-
“Do you like the name Bessie?” Percy asked, just to make sure. He’d given the name to the little mer-cow before he’d known the creature was sentient- or that he would eventually shapeshift to have a human-ish form, holy shit- and it was a girl’s name. Not that it being a girl’s name mattered, not really, but he’d rather ask.
Bessie blinked up at him innocently, eyes impossibly wide. “Why wouldn't I like it? It’s my name!”
“Fair enough,” Percy muttered, once more very distracted by the strange feelings welling up inside of himself as he stared into Bessie’s wide brown eyes. Protectiveness, possessiveness, love.
The feelings themselves weren’t all that strange. He’d felt similar things for the children at camp, and his friends and family. Percy had always loved quickly and possessively. Once he decided someone was his- his friends, his family- he would defend that person to the death, do anything for them. He suspected that was something he got from his father, who was known to be possessive and overwhelming in his love.
The emotions hadn’t come from nowhere- he’d always been fond of the Ophiotaurus, but the sight of Bessie in his arms made them swell in intensity. The only time it had come close to the intensity he felt now was when he’d met Estelle for the first time.
‘Is this what it feels like to be a father?’ Percy wondered hysterically. Oh gods, did this mean he was effectively Bessie’s parent now? (The kid definitely looked enough like him to be his kid. Which was baffling… Why did Bessie look so much like Percy?)
The Ophiotaurus was supposed to be one of a kind, so Percy doubted there was a mama mer-cow anywhere out there. Certainly, none of the gods would have any sort of parental claim on the child after all they’d done to him. And Percy had been who the Ophiotaurus had sought out initially, back on the quest to rescue Artemis. He’d also responded to Thalia, but it had been Percy he’d followed in the end. He had even listened when Percy had told him to return to the Long Island Sound with Grover.
And now, the first time he’d gained a human form, he’d run straight to Percy.
Fuck, was Percy a dad now? He wasn’t prepared to be a dad! He was a college dropout who worked a dangerous job as a sword instructor at a camp for demigods, and he still- for all intent and purposes- lived in one of his dad’s houses since he still slept in Cabin 3.
Recently, Percy had realized he wasn’t willing to bring children into this world when they would be in constant danger from monsters. Even if he raised his children in New Rome they’d be required to join the Legion, which would put them in danger anyway. If he adopted a mortal child, they would still be endangered from the monsters that came after him, and they wouldn’t be able to protect themselves with the mist veiling the truth from their eyes. He’d always wanted to have kids, but if he’d been forced to conclude he wouldn’t be able to have any in good conscience. He’d consoled himself with being able to look after the younger kids at camp and soiling Estelle rotten, even if it wasn’t the same.
But now, here was a child who was clearly already attached to Percy and had no one else to care for them. A child who would already be targeted by monsters, regardless of what Percy did. A child who needed him.
Fuck, was he seriously considering adopting the Ophiotaurus? Annabeth was going to be so disappointed that he’d adopted a child with no prior planning…. But if Percy was going to adopt a child, this seemed like the most likely way he’d go about it. He’d never been one for planning ahead.
Percy didn't realize he’d been staring Bessie directly in the eyes until the child broke eye contact and started to kick, pointing down at the ground insistently. “Put me down now!”
“Put me down now, please,” Percy corrected him absently, the response automatic.
Bessie dutifully echoed him, and Percy let him down. The child took off running immediately, and Percy nearly started after him, before stopping. It wasn’t like he could get lost anywhere in the throne room, and Percy was a little curious about where the kid was heading.
Bessie made a b-line towards the hearth, which made everyone in the room startle, including Percy. Everyone knew what the consequences of Bessie burning were.
Thankfully, Bessie slowed down well before he got to the edge of the hearth. He approached the edge slowly but clearly filled with curiosity. The child crouched at the edge of the hearth, which was burning low today, but still warm and welcoming.
Percy suddenly realized that Bessie had spent most of his short life on Olympus, trapped in the tank Poseidon and Hephaestus had built for him. It wasn’t a bad environment; Poseidon wouldn’t have stood for a sea creature getting a less than adequate enclosure.
But that was just it. It was an enclosure meant for an animal, not a child. Percy couldn’t comprehend how Bessie must be feeling right now. Overwhelmed, most likely, but still insatiably curious about everything he’d been able to see but never explore over the years.
Bessie reached out a small clawed hand- gods, he was so small- and pressed his hand to the bricks that made up the side of the hearth.
In a flash that made Percy instinctually cover his eyes to shield himself from the sigh of a god appearing, Hestia was sitting at the hearthside, not far from Bessie. The child made a sound of surprise that sounded suspiciously like a moo, shying away from the newly appeared goddess.
Percy hadn’t expected to see Hestia today. He’d known she’d been in the throne room for the entire meeting, but she hadn’t taken on a physical form. From what Percy had seen over the years, this was typical for the goddess. Hestia seemed content with her decision to give up her seat on the council to Dionysus. She stayed out of the meetings and didn't interfere unless there was a great need for her to intervene.
But she was here now, looking like a young girl like she typically did. Hestia smiled at Bessie. When that caused Bessie to shy away even more, her smile flattered slightly, and she turned her attention toward Percy, who had been watching the interaction like a hawk. They locked eyes, and Hestia’s smile returned with full force. Percy thought Hestia looked incredibly pleased and a little bit smug as she drew her long veil closer around her.
There was no time to contemplate what the goddess might be thinking, as Bessie seemed to have enough of having the goddess so close to him. He slowly inched away until he had put some distance between them, then turned and ran away.
Straight toward Poseidon.
The rest of the gods seemed to have gotten over their collective shock, but that didn’t stop Poseidon from twitching as Bessie ran as fast as his little legs could carry him toward the sea god.
Only Percy’s trust in Poseidon allowed him to let Bessie continue doing whatever he was doing.
That newly blossomed and fragile trust in his father was something born from several trips to Atlantis which allowed him to spend more time with Poseidon than ever before. Actually being able to sit down and talk about the events of the two wars had cleared a lot of the tension between the two of them.
Percy had learned exactly how much Poseidon cared for him. The god had even declared Percy a prince of Atlantis, further proving to the demigod that his father was serious about the fact that he wasn’t going to drop Percy as soon as he was no longer useful in fulfilling a great prophecy or two.
It was Percy’s trust in the position he held in his father’s heart that allowed him to hold back from calling for Bessie to return to his side. He wouldn’t come to any harm by Poseidon’s hand, at least.
Bessie continued straight on, ignoring Poseidon and ducking around his legs to get to the throne, giggling with quiet awe-filled joy as he carefully inspected the barnacles and sea stars that encrusted the legs of sea god’s throne.
Thankfully, he didn’t try to touch it. Percy might have been able to sit on his father’s throne, but he doubted Bessie would be able to handle that sort of raw power coursing through him, and that was if Poseidon didn’t kill him for daring to touch in the first place.
I would die for you,’ Percy thought suddenly as he watched the kid crouch to examine a colorful piece of coral. The intensity of his thoughts startled him, but he didn’t find himself wanting to take them back. ‘‘I would kill for you. I’d fight the gods themselves if I had to,’ he thought very intently in Bessie’s direction, as if it would allow the boy to read his mind.
His dad made a strange, strangled coughing noise, and at least half of the council shifted uncomfortably. Percy was once again reminded of his audience, and of the fact that gods could read minds. He winced- he really didn’t need to give the council any more reasons to want him dead.
Thankfully though, none of them looked particularly murderous at the moment.
Hera was staring in Poseidon’s direction, but didn’t seem too upset. Demeter‘s eyes were closed as if she were trying to block out the world, and she looked incredibly… Long-suffering was probably the best way to describe it. Hades had looked even worse, his head in his hands as if nursing a blossoming headache.
A gleeful look had overtaken Ares’ face, which made Percy incredibly wary. He would have to keep an eye on the war god. If Ares thought he could use Bessie to get to Percy, he was sorely mistaken. Thankfully, Aphrodite had turned to glare her lover down. He looked cowed, at least for now.
The gods’ reactions made Percy feel strangely nervous. He’d never cared very much about their opinions of him before, since several of the gods in this room had been trying to kill him since before he even knew they existed, but this was different.
“Bessie,” he called quietly. “Come back over here, please.” Bessie obeyed, running back over to him and demanding to be held again. Percy obeyed. The child was a strange mix of hyper and clingy, flipping easily between clearly wanting to run around and see everything, and wanting to be held at all times.
“I wasn’t done looking!” Bessie complained when he was in Percy’s arms, but didn't seem too upset.
Hera finished glaring at Poseidon and cleared her throat, drawing everyone’s attention to her. “I believe,” she said, sounding like she was forcing herself to not scream, “That perhaps Perseus should take the child out of the room so we may discuss this new… development.”
That sounded like an excellent idea to Percy, especially since Bessie had flinched and cowered into his chest at the sound of the goddess’ voice. But of course no one asked him what he thought.
“I will not allow the boy to take the creature away,” Zeus rumbled in response.
“Bessie is clearly not a creature anymore,” Percy protested, only to be largely ignored.
“It would be unwise,” Athena agreed.
“Don’t be obtuse, husband,” Hera snapped at Zeus. “They won’t be allowed to leave the mountain. We must discuss this, and having the child in the room would be unwise.”
This last part was said derisively in Athena’s direction. Hera didn’t say having Percy in the room would also be unwise, but everyone could hear the implication, even Percy himself. A moment before he’d been all for leaving the room as soon as possible, but this made him hesitant to leave. If they were deciding Bessie’s fate then Percy wanted to be there to speak in the kid’s defense like he had the first time.
On the other hand, Percy knew what it was like to hear the gods debate whether or not you should die, and the last thing he wanted to do was subject Bessie to that.
His conflict must have been obvious on his face.
“Go,” his father’s voice echoed in his head. Percy met his father’s eyes and saw understanding there. “Take the child away from here. I will do my best to protect him.”
Percy wanted to protest that that wasn’t good enough, but before he could, his father’s voice came again.
“Percy,” His father sounded amused, even in his head. “I was able to prevent his destruction before, was I not? He is yours, so therefore he is mine. I will not allow harm to come to him if it distresses you so. Trust me, my son.”
An ancient, possessive part of Percy wanted to preen at his father acknowledging Bessie as his, but he refrained. He didn’t know what was going to happen in the next few hours, let alone the coming days and months. He shouldn’t be getting attached to the child so fast. The longing that had hit him so swiftly should’ve been alarming, but for some reason Percy couldn’t bring himself to care.
Maybe it was the fact that Bessie looked so much like Percy. Maybe it was the fact that Percy could recognize himself in Bessie, as a child who the gods had tried to kill before, and was still in active danger of being killed now.
Whatever it was, Percy couldn’t shake the feeling of possessiveness that had come over him, and he didn’t want to. Bessie was his.
He gave an awkward bow, hindered by the squirming child in his arms, and then turned to leave the room as quickly as he could. As he had half expected he would be, he was stopped by Athena objecting once more.
“I agree that the Ophiotaurus would not be in any danger from the boy, but there are plenty of others who would be tempted, even on Olympus.” She was leaning forward in her throne, eyes still trained unnervingly onto where Bessie was nestled in Percy’s arms. She looked too much like an owl who had locked onto their prey and was trying to figure out the best way to go in for the kill.
Hera waved a hand dismissively. “Perseus has proven to be more than capable of holding his own in a fight.”
Even against a god, went unspoken. Ares’ expression soured, and Hades, who had finally lifted his face from his hands, just looked exhausted. Neither of them reacted any more than that, though.
Athena sat back in her throne, seeming to concede the point. Percy felt himself relax slightly now that he was no longer pinned under her gaze. Zeus also seemed to have bent to his wife’s will, as he said nothing more. “Go,” his father urged him mentally once again, and this time Percy listened immediately, leaving before any of the other gods could come up with another reason to protest.
WARNINGS : murder, body horror.
ADMIN NOTE : as we have plans for a vaster plot drop for halloween, please limit your open starters at this time to october the 30th at the latest !
the haunting hour is rife with activity the nearer that hallow's eve approaches, & as the clock strikes three in the morning of october 2nd, the home of nadine castellanos & mei ruan erupts to a cacophony of ringing landline ... the roommates sleep through the call, & there is a blinking '1' for a voicemail.
' you know what tastes good in the fall feast ? . . . the roasted GOOSE.'
when nadine reversed the call & rang it back, the number traced back to the residence of takaharu mochizuki.
STEVE MCCRAWLY TUNING IN LIVE ...
"a grim report for the citizens of anchorage today ! police responded to a call from the winterwood estates. missing person ADISORN TAYEN has now been declared a homicide. the parent, former model & daughter of local business elite SUCHAI TAYEN was discovered in the master bath of takaharu mochizuki's home by the housekeeper, stabbed to death with what detectives are describing as a carrot. that's right, folks, a carrot was the violent weapon that appears to have ended their life. the investigation is still ongoing, but the homeowner has been declared a suspect & taken in for questioning, along with the other residents of the home. this comes nearly two years since the murder of their father, one of our many deceased from the NEW YEAR'S EVE GONE WRONG in 2022. neighbors have been calling in to let us know they witnessed a ransacking on the lawn the previous evening, but police have refused to comment further at this time. we've gone to the streets & spoken to a few residents & truckers — josseline, i'm hearing rumors of some BAD BLOOD between these two. do we think it's coincidence that two members of the tayen family were slain in incidents involving carrots ?? stick with us for live updates on the case."
october's monthly council meeting adjourned with an almost unanimous vote to establish CLAPPY to local businesses & storefronts around anchorage for increased security, though a few retained options to renegotiate.
the state of the clinic was addressed upon eliana moschetti's return & most of the lost animals were recovered, but she was remiss to discover something strange. jaeha nam brought to her a peculiar sight : a fingernail that matched her nail paint in one of their clear glass jars ...
mid-october has marched in a new slew of NIGHTMARES : mingxia ruan's lucid dream of a puppet emerging toward her & grabbing her hand, as it opens its mouth to wordlessly sound out in an eerie rattle, HAVE YOU SEEN MY MOTHER ??
she sleep walked all the way across town to the door of rika hoshino when the police came to collect her ...
don't forget the other one !! song minjae awoke on the floor of his apartment to stench of rot & the stolen portrait from last halloween of a blonde-haired hairess with its face smeared out in a pool of crimson taking over his bed. someone must be missing it.
a fresh slew of letters arrived in the mail for a few of you lucky bastards ...
